How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT and AI Search
How Do You Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT and AI Search?
You earn AI citations mostly off your own website. AI assistants build answers from a small pool of heavily trusted sources: community sites, encyclopedias, news, review platforms and business listings. For a local business the fastest path is an accurate Google Business Profile, real reviews, consistent listings across the web, and pages that answer specific questions in plain language. Your site still matters. It is usually the thing that corroborates the answer, not the thing being quoted.
That is an uncomfortable thing for a web design company to tell you. We build websites. It would be better business for us to say the website is the whole answer. The data does not support it, and neither did our own test.
The Uncomfortable Math Behind AI Citations
AI citations are far more concentrated than Google results ever were. In its AI Platform Citation Source Index published in May 2026, 5W Public Relations synthesized more than 680 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, drawn from six large citation studies run between August 2024 and April 2026. The top 15 domains captured 68% of all citation share (5W Public Relations, 2026).
Reddit came first, cited at roughly 40% frequency across the engines. Wikipedia, YouTube, Forbes and Business Insider rounded out the top five. Journalism accounted for 27% of citations overall and 49% on time-sensitive questions.
You are not going to outrank Wikipedia. That is not the game. A local business gets pulled into an answer when the assistant needs something those giant sources cannot supply: who actually does this work, in this town, and can it be verified somewhere other than their own marketing.
What Happened When We Ran This Test on Ourselves
Last quarter we opened Perplexity and asked it the exact question our buyers ask: what is the best web design agency in Delaware. Then we read every source it cited.
Peak Web Technologies appeared in zero of the ten sources. We rank for plenty of Delaware terms on Google. In that AI answer we did not exist.
So we asked the follow-up, which is the part most people skip: why not us. The assistant answered plainly. It had no independent corroboration to work from. What it cited instead were directory roundups, review platforms and third-party "best of" lists. Every one of those is somebody else vouching for a business. None of them are the business talking about itself.
That single exchange redirected our entire strategy. We had been treating AI visibility as a content problem on our own site. It was an off-site evidence problem.
Run the Same Diagnostic on Your Own Business
This costs nothing and takes about fifteen minutes. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode and work through four prompts:
- Ask the buying question your customers actually type, like "best roofer in Newark DE" or "who should I hire for a custom CRM in Delaware".
- Read the cited sources, not just the answer. Note which domains keep appearing.
- Ask why the named businesses were recommended. The assistant will usually tell you which signals it leaned on.
- Ask directly why your business was not included. The answer is often specific and actionable.
Do this once a quarter and keep the screenshots. It is the closest thing to a rank tracker that AI search currently offers, and it tells you which off-site surfaces you need to be on.
The Signals That Actually Move AI Citations for a Local Business
For a business with a physical service area, the highest-leverage work is boring and mostly off your website.
Your Google Business Profile does the heaviest lifting. It is the structured record of who you are, and it feeds far more than Google. Reviews matter for the same reason: they are third-party evidence that survives being quoted. Consistent name, address and phone details across listings let an assistant match your business to itself with confidence.
Bing deserves more attention than most Delaware businesses give it, because Bing supplies local data to Copilot and to ChatGPT's search. Bing Places can import directly from your Google Business Profile with instant verification and then stay synced weekly, so getting Google right fixes Bing at the same time.
Which brings us to the mistake we found on our own listing. When we imported our profile into Bing, it came through as open 24 hours. Our Google Business Profile had been set to 24/7, and that one wrong field had quietly propagated to Yelp and everywhere else that scrapes Google. We had been correcting the symptoms on individual directories. The source was upstream the whole time.
That is the part worth internalizing. AI assistants triangulate facts about you across your site, your listings and your reviews. When those disagree, confidence drops and you get left out of the answer. One wrong field corrupts the whole graph. We wrote more about the profile fundamentals in our guide to getting your business on Google Maps.
Google AI Overviews Is Still an SEO Problem
Not every AI surface works the same way. Google AI Overviews draws about 97% of its cited sources from the top 20 organic results, which means classic SEO still gates it. If you are not on page one or two, you are not in the overview.
Being indexed at all comes first, and that is less automatic than it sounds. Our own service pages sat in Search Console as "Discovered, currently not indexed" for months. The cause had nothing to do with content quality. Our header menu revealed its service links only on hover, so those links never existed in the server-rendered HTML, and the footer pointed at anchor links on a hub page instead of the pages themselves. Google could barely find them. We added real sitewide footer links to every service page plus contextual links from related articles, then requested indexing.
If a crawler cannot reach a page, no AI engine will ever cite it. Check your own site by viewing the raw HTML rather than the rendered menu, because dropdowns and accordions frequently hide links from crawlers. Our post on why your business is not showing up on Google covers the rest of the checklist.
What Does Not Work
Publishing large volumes of AI-written pages is the most common wasted effort we see. Page count has never been the constraint. Anyone can generate a hundred pages in an afternoon, which is precisely why volume signals nothing. Assistants cite specific, verifiable answers, so one page that genuinely answers a question beats twenty that restate the same generic advice.
Be skeptical of anyone selling guaranteed AI citations. The same 5W index found ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell from roughly 60% to about 10% within six weeks in late 2025. Sourcing behavior shifts in weeks, not years. You can improve your odds substantially and you cannot buy a guarantee, which is why we describe our own AI search and GEO work as improving your chances.
Buying links remains a Google link-scheme violation, and it does not produce the kind of editorial mention an assistant treats as evidence anyway.
A Realistic Order of Operations
If you are starting from nothing, this is the sequence we would run for a Delaware business, in this order:
- Fix your Google Business Profile first: correct hours, full service list, real photos, accurate categories. Everything downstream inherits from it.
- Reconcile your name, address and phone across every listing you can find, then import to Bing Places so Copilot and ChatGPT get clean data.
- Build a steady review habit. Third-party proof is the signal assistants weight most for local recommendations.
- Confirm your money pages are actually indexed and reachable through crawlable HTML links.
- Write a small number of genuinely useful pages that answer real questions with specifics only you can provide.
- Earn placement on the third-party surfaces your buyers already read, including local directories and roundups.
Notice that five of the six items happen away from your website. That is the honest shape of this work. If you want the underlying local fundamentals first, start with local SEO for Delaware small businesses.
How Long Does This Take?
Months, not weeks. AI systems re-crawl and re-index on their own schedules, and citations follow the same trust signals that move local rankings. Listings and profile corrections propagate within days to a few weeks. Reviews and third-party mentions compound over quarters. Anyone quoting you a two-week turnaround is describing something other than how these systems work.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?
Focus on off-site evidence. ChatGPT leans heavily on established sources like Wikipedia, community discussion, news and business listings, and it uses Bing data for local queries. An accurate Google Business Profile synced to Bing Places, genuine reviews, consistent listing details and mentions on third-party sites matter more than changes to your own website copy.
Is GEO different from SEO?
They overlap heavily rather than compete. Google AI Overviews pulls roughly 97% of its sources from the top 20 organic results, so traditional SEO still gates that surface. GEO adds an emphasis on answer-first content, structured data, entity consistency and third-party corroboration, because assistants need to verify claims across multiple sources before repeating them.
Can I pay to be recommended by an AI assistant?
No, and treat any such offer as a warning sign. Assistants generate recommendations from their sources at query time. You can influence which evidence exists about your business, but no vendor controls the output. Citation patterns also shift quickly, with one 2026 index recording ChatGPT's Reddit citations dropping from about 60% to 10% in six weeks.
Does publishing more blog posts help me get cited?
Not by itself. Volume is trivially easy to produce now, so it carries no weight as a signal. What earns citations is specific, verifiable information that is hard to find elsewhere, such as real local pricing, first-hand process detail or genuine answers to narrow questions. One strong page outperforms twenty thin ones.
How do I check whether AI search mentions my business?
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode the buying question your customers use, then read the cited sources rather than only the answer. Follow up by asking why the listed businesses were recommended and why yours was not. It is free, takes about fifteen minutes, and is worth repeating quarterly to track movement.
Does this work for a business outside Delaware?
Yes. The mechanics are the same anywhere, since assistants everywhere favor corroborated third-party evidence over self-description. Our work focuses on Delaware because that is where our clients are and where we know the local directories, publications and review surfaces that carry weight.
