Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google (And How to Fix It)

The 6 Most Common Reasons (And Fixes)

If you've searched for your business on Google and can't find it, don't panic. It's almost always one of these six issues — and all of them are fixable.

1. You Don't Have a Website

This is the most common reason. Google needs something to index. If you don't have a website, Google has nothing to show people when they search for your services.

Fix: Get a professional website. Even a simple 5-page site gives Google the content it needs to rank you for local searches. Websites start at $1,500.

2. Your Site Isn't Optimized for Search (SEO)

Having a website isn't enough — it needs to be built with SEO in mind. Common issues:

  • No keywords in your page titles or headings
  • Missing meta descriptions
  • No location-specific content (e.g., "Serving Wilmington, DE")
  • Images without alt text

Fix: Each page should target a specific keyword that your customers actually search. Your homepage should include your city, state, and main service.

3. You Don't Have a Google Business Profile

Without a Google Business Profile, you won't appear on Google Maps or in the "Local Pack" (the map results at the top of local searches). This is the easiest win for any local business.

Fix: Create and verify your Google Business Profile at business.google.com. It's free. See our step-by-step guide.

4. Your Website Is Too New

Google doesn't index new websites instantly. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks for a brand-new site to start appearing in search results.

Fix: Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console. This tells Google your site exists and asks it to crawl your pages. Beyond that — be patient. Consistent SEO work will speed things up.

5. Your Site Is Too Slow or Not Mobile-Friendly

Google penalizes slow, non-mobile-friendly websites. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load or doesn't work properly on phones, Google pushes you down in results.

  • Over 60% of Google searches happen on mobile devices
  • Sites that load in under 2 seconds rank significantly higher than slower sites

Fix: Test your site at PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). If your score is below 70, your site needs work. All Peak Web sites score 90+ and load in under 2 seconds.

6. Your Competitors Have Stronger SEO

Even if your site is properly set up, you might not rank on page 1 because your competitors have been doing SEO longer. They have more content, more backlinks, and more Google reviews.

Fix: This is where ongoing SEO work matters. Consistent blog content, regular Google reviews, and local backlinks will help you climb over time. SEO is a marathon, not a sprint — but the businesses that start sooner finish first.
